Bubble Ice on Lake Baikal

Formation of Bubble Ice on Lake Baikal
The famous bubble ice of Lake Baikal is a stunning natural phenomenon, especially popular among photographers and winter travelers. Here's how it forms and where it's commonly found:

1. Methane Emission
Organic matter in the lakebed sediments decomposes under anaerobic (low-oxygen) conditions, producing methane gas.
The more active the microbial processes at the bottom of the lake, the more methane is released.
2. Bubbles Rise and Freeze
During the winter, as the lake begins to freeze, methane gas bubbles rise from the bottom.
Due to the rapid freezing process, these bubbles get trapped layer by layer in the thickening ice, forming stacked, frozen white discs.
3. High Ice Transparency
Lake Baikal’s water is exceptionally pure and clear, resulting in ice with high transparency.
This clarity allows the frozen methane bubbles to be seen distinctly from the surface.
