The stones on Olkhon Island in Lake Baikal that resemble cairns, locally often called "Ovoo," or sometimes simply understood by tourists as stone piles with prayerful significance, have multifaceted meanings deeply rooted in the traditional beliefs and cultural customs of the Buryat people.
敖包 Ovoos
Sacrifice and Worship: Ovoos were originally established as altars for sacrificing to deities, mountain spirits, land spirits, and other natural divinities. People would offer stones, branches, hadas (silk scarves symbolizing respect), food, wine, etc., to the Ovoos to pray for peace, good harvests, health, and good fortune. On Olkhon Island, a place considered sacred, these stone piles especially carry people's awe and respect for the forces of nature.
