Shaman Rock,Shaman Pillars

Shaman Rock, also known as Burkhan Cape, stands on the western shore of Olkhon Island near the village of Khuzhir. This iconic white-grey rock formation is one of Lake Baikal's most sacred sites, revered by the indigenous Buryat people. According to legend, the spirit of Lake Baikal resides in a cave within the rock, making it a historic place of worship and ritual. Today, it draws visitors for its breathtaking views—especially during sunrise and sunset—and in winter, it’s a stunning scene framed by the frozen lake.

Olkhon Island & Shamanic Culture:
As the largest island in Lake Baikal, Olkhon is considered the "spiritual heart" of Shamanism. Its pristine landscapes and mystical traditions create a unique cultural tapestry. Both the majestic Shaman Rock and the solemn Shaman Pillars embody ancient wisdom, reflecting humanity’s harmonious coexistence with nature and the spiritual realm.

The Shaman Pillars, situated near Shaman Rock on Olkhon Island, consist of 13 wooden or stone pillars that form a ceremonial site symbolizing the 13 layers of heaven in Shamanic cosmology. These pillars are often wrapped with colorful cloth ribbons, representing prayers and connections to the spirits. Each pillar is associated with a specific natural element or deity, serving as a vital medium in Shamanic rituals. Devotees visit to make offerings and wishes, believing the pillars channel their prayers between earth and sky. The Shaman Pillars not only reflect the Buryat people’s reverence for nature but also stand as a central symbol of Olkhon Island’s role as a sacred hub of Shamanism.
