The Tragic Tale of Father Baikal and Daughter Angara
The origin of the Angara River is steeped in a famous Buryat Mongol legend:
Baikal was a stern lake god with 336 sons (symbolizing rivers flowing into the lake) and one beloved daughter, Angara.
Angara fell in love with Yenisei, a warrior from afar (the Yenisei River), and defied her father to flee toward him. Enraged, Baikal hurled a giant rock (Shaman Rock) to block her path, but failed.
Today, Shaman Rock stands at the Angara’s source, symbolizing freedom and love. Locals say Angara’s tears became the river’s pure waters, nurturing Siberia’s lands.
