Ogoy Island is a narrow, elongated island in Lake Baikal, located in the southwestern part of the lake near Olkhon Island. Stretching about 3 kilometers in length and only a few hundred meters wide, the island features gentle terrain covered with grasslands and rocks. Its most iconic landmark is the Stupa of Enlightenment, a pure white Buddhist stupa built in 2005 by monks and volunteers as a symbol of peace and harmony. This stupa attracts numerous tourists and pilgrims, becoming a spiritual beacon in the Baikal region.
Ogoy Island boasts pristine and serene natural landscapes, with lush greenery in summer and snow-covered vistas in winter. Visitors can take a boat to the island for hiking and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Baikal, immersing themselves in its untouched tranquility.
Dragon Cape (also known as Cape Khoboy) is situated at the northernmost tip of Olkhon Island, the largest island in Lake Baikal, and is one of the lake’s most iconic landmarks. Its name derives from a local Buryat legend: the jagged cliffs resemble dragon’s teeth and are considered a sacred site.
The cape’s geology is strikingly unique, with towering rock formations rising abruptly from the lake to form serrated cliffs over 100 meters high. It is one of the best vantage points for panoramic views of
Lake Baikal, offering glimpses of distant mountain ranges on clear days. In winter, the frozen lake transforms into a field of turquoise ice, while icicles cling to the cliffs, creating a surreal, otherworldly landscape.
The area around Dragon Cape is ecologically rich, occasionally visited by Baikal seals, and a paradise for hikers and photographers.
